The World Food Platform Western Andean Region

The World Food Platform Western Andean Region is a regional initiative designed to support food systems across one of the world's most ecologically diverse and strategically important agricultural zones. Stretching along the Andean corridor, the region is characterized by sharp altitude variations, rich biodiversity, and long-standing agricultural traditions that sustain millions of small and medium producers.

Food systems in the Western Andean region are shaped by mountain ecosystems, climate sensitivity, and fragmented rural markets. Glacial retreat, water stress, soil erosion, and extreme weather events increasingly affect crop yields, livestock, and food access. At the same time, the region offers strong potential in high-value crops, indigenous grains, sustainable livestock, agroecology, and biodiversity-based food production. The World Food Platform Western Andean Region provides a structured framework to address these realities.

The Platform connects governments, producer organizations, cooperatives, research institutions, development partners, and investors. It supports collaboration across climate-resilient agriculture, food security, nutrition, value-chain development, logistics, and market access.

By aligning regional knowledge with global expertise, the World Food Platform Western Andean Region strengthens resilient and sustainable food systems, protects livelihoods, and supports long-term food security while preserving the region's unique ecosystems and agricultural heritage.
